Holiday Web Receipts Strong, But Rate of Growth Dips
The latest mixed-bag of news for retailers hails from cyberspace: holiday e-commerce sales were robust, but showed their slowest-ever growth, industry analysts projected. The sales growth of 19 percent, while enviable for traditional retailers, was down sharply from the 25 percent to 30 percent growth rates of recent years. Retail industry analysts said the deceleration underscored a tight economy, but also reflected changing consumer and retailing habits. The New York Times' Matt Richtel reports. more

U.S. Consumers More Wired, Survey Finds
About 38% of consumers are watching TV shows online, 36% use their cell phones as entertainment devices and 45% are creating online content like Web sites, music, videos and blogs for others, according to a new-media survey from Deloitte & Touche. The findings of the online survey of 2,081 U.S. consumers, conducted Oct. 25-31, were provided to The Hollywood Reporter before their official release next month. Gail Schiller, The Hollywood Reporter, reports. more

SEARCH

Nielsen: Nearly 60% of Web Searches on Google
Google is nudging toward claiming 60 percent of all Web searches conducted in the U.S., according to the latest figures from Nielsen Online. In November, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company accounted for a dominant 57.7 percent of all searches, or over 4.2 billion searches in total. Roughly a year ago, Googles search share fell just below the 50 percent threshold, though Nielsen says that it has recently made some changes to its reporting methodology that make true year over year comparisons unavailable at this time. BROADBAND

Life & Style Vet Pasetsky to Start Coverawards.com
Ex-Life & Style editor and general manager Mark Pasetsky is planning a new online venture, Coverawards.com, that would rate magazine and newspaper newsstand covers. On the site, set to launch in the first quarter of 2008, Pasetsky said he would evaluate magazine and newspaper covers and their online home pages and invite readers to submit their own comments. Pasetsky said the site would provide a way for editors and publishers to get real-time feedback on covers after they appear. Mediaweek's Lucia Moses reports. more

GAMING

In-Game Advertising Built Momentum in '07
While Microsoft's "Halo," the most anticipated video game to hit store shelves in 2007 was off limits to advertisers, the sector gained momentum both in games and around games. Among the hot titles packed with advertising was Activision's "Guitar Hero III." "The biggest thing this year is the momentum, the acceptance of the medium, the increase in size in the advertising buys, and increased acceptance in the publisher community," Cory Van Arsdale, CEO of Microsoft's Massive unit told ClickZ News. Enid Burns, The ClickZ Network, reports. more

MOBILE

Mobile Offers Opportunity For Casual Gaming
Despite efforts to boost mobile gaming, consumers still see phones as casual gaming devices, according to a recent report. Parks Associates released a report, "The New Frontier: Portable and Mobile Gaming," earlier this month. It found that consumers don't keep pace with technology developments in the mobile gaming industry. "New 3-D and multiplayer mobile games look great in demos, but casual games are where the money is and will be for the next few years," Yuanzhe Cai, director of Broadband and Gaming for Parks Associates, said in a statement. OTHER NEWS

Obama Girl, Britney Boy Top '07 YouTube Videos
Videos by a self-styled Obama Girl, a fan's tearful defense of Britney Spears and an attack by a herd of buffaloes on a pride of lions, were among the most popular clips on YouTube.com in 2007. But the videos were not just popular because of the millions of times they were seen on the YouTube.com Web site, which allows users to post their homemade videos. The rankings, released by YouTube on Thursday, took into account the most shared, most discussed, top rated and general popularity of clips to determine which ones people were thinking and talking about most.
